Square Gas Fire Tables

Square gas fire tables from The Outdoor Plus, Fire by Design and Firepit Elements. Clean lines and equal sides make a square fire table a crisp centerpiece for modern patios and seating areas built around right angles. Browse steel and concrete designs in chat and bar heights, offered for natural gas or liquid propane.

Why Choose a Square Fire Table?

A square fire table lines up with the edges of a patio, the grid of pavers and the straight lines of outdoor sofas. Place seating on all four sides for a balanced layout, or set an L-shaped sectional along two sides and keep the others open. Because the sides are equal, every seat sits about the same distance from the flame.

The flat, generous tabletop around the fire is the practical bonus. It is a natural place for drinks, plates and decor, so a square fire table works as both a coffee table and a fire feature.

Designs in This Collection

  • The Outdoor Plus – the Monterey, a bar-height, 42"-tall square fire table with an enclosed center cabinet, offered in 30", 36", 44" and 54" sizes.
  • Fire by Design – square fire pit tables including the Legacy Square, Geo Square, Aspen Square, Aura Square, Square Oblique and the GFRC Round Cube, offered in a wide choice of colors.
  • Firepit Elements – the Carmel Fire Table in glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC).

Choosing the Right Size

Measure the space and plan for chairs, legs and walkways on every side you want to use. A larger square gives more tabletop and a bigger flame, while a compact square keeps the group close and suits smaller patios. Lining the table up with the paving pattern or deck boards makes the whole space feel planned. Each product page lists the dimensions and burning area published by the manufacturer.

Choosing the Right Height

Height is the biggest decision with a fire table, because it decides which furniture goes with it. Most fire tables in our range are coffee-table or chat height, which pairs with lounge chairs, deep seating and outdoor sofas. Taller dining, counter and bar height tables pair with dining chairs and bar stools, so guests can eat and drink around the flame. Some tables are offered in more than one height. Check the height in the dimensions on each product page and measure the seat height of your furniture before you order.

Materials and Finishes

Powder coat offers a wide range of colors with a durable baked-on finish that resists chipping and fading. GFRC and concrete designs give a solid, architectural presence and come in a range of colors to match stone, paving and planters. Choose the finish that ties in with your furniture and the materials of your home.

Plan the Gas Supply First

Every gas fire feature has a BTU rating that tells you how much gas the burner needs to reach its full flame. Pipe diameter, the length of the run from the meter or tank, and the number of fittings all affect how much gas reaches the burner, and an undersized line is the most common reason a fire feature never reaches its full flame height. Share the BTU rating listed on the product page with your gas professional so they can confirm the line size before installation.

Choosing an Ignition System

Many products in this collection are offered with a choice of ignition. Match lit systems are the simplest and need no electricity. Flame sense systems add a safety valve that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out, and spark ignition lets you light the fire with a push of a button. Electronic ignition lets you control the fire from a switch, timer or home automation system. The available options vary by manufacturer and are listed on each product page.

Natural Gas or Propane

Choose the fuel before you order. Natural gas and liquid propane versions are built with different components and are not interchangeable. Natural gas suits permanent installations close to an existing gas line, while propane runs from a tank and works where there is no gas line. Our Natural Gas vs. Propane guide explains the differences in more detail.

Ventilation and Drainage

Any enclosed gas fire feature needs ventilation so gas cannot collect inside the base. Propane is heavier than air and settles low; natural gas is lighter than air and rises. Follow the vent requirements in the manufacturer's installation instructions and your local code. Rainwater also filters down through the fire media, so make sure there is a path for water to drain away from the burner and gas components.

Finishing With Fire Glass or Lava Rock

Fire media hides the burner, spreads the flame and gives the fire feature its finished look. Fire glass adds color and sparkle, while lava rock gives a natural, rustic look. Cover the burner evenly at the depth recommended in the installation instructions. Shop our fire glass and lava rock, and protect your fire feature between uses with a fire pit cover.

Professional Installation

All gas fire features must be installed by a qualified, locally licensed gas professional, following the manufacturer's installation instructions and your local building codes. Keep the clearances to combustible materials listed in the instructions, and do not place a gas fire feature under an awning, pergola or other overhead structure.
